Large-scale renewable energy connected to the grid will lead to the increment of power injection disturbance and the decrement of rotational inertia that is important for suppression of frequency variation
which brings new problems and challenges for the automatic generation control(AGC)of power system. Incorporating new types of regulation resources and advanced control theory are effective measures to improve frequency regulation quality and efficiency. This paper firstly analyzes and summarizes the impacts of large-scale renewable energy integration on frequency response performance and regulation requirement of power systems. The key issues and research status of AGC with new regulation resources are analyzed from different aspects: feasibility
economical efficiency
effectiveness
and control strategy. Then
the research status and application prospects of typical advanced control techniques for AGC are inducted and discussed. Finally
the challenges and corresponding research directions on AGC with large-scale renewable energy integration are provided and prospected.
