A traveling wave protection scheme for high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line based on the traveling wave amplitude is studied. Several factors influencing the traveling wave characteristics are discussed. The results show that a distant fault location from the measuring point
large grounded transition resistance
low-voltage operating mode
and converters out of service will all result in reduced traveling wave amplitude and variation rate. By referring to the traveling wave protection logic of the ±800 kV Xiangjiaba-Shanghai HVDC transmission demonstration project (Xiangjiaba-Shanghai project for short)
the anti-disturbance performance of the protection logic under instantaneous perturbation and strenuous oscillations is analyzed. In addition
the influences of protection logic cooperation
criterion judging methods and protection configuration schemes on the setting of protection value are treated. On this basis
a setting process of traveling wave protection is proposed. Finally
the feasibility of the process is verified through the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation model of the Xiangjiaba-Shanghai project.
