Ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) operation overvoltage and fault overvoltage are closely related to pole control and protection characteristics. So an analysis is made on overvoltage of a ±1 100 kV UHVDC project to be built in the near future to study the influence of the pole control and protection characteristics on the project. Based on the sophisticated electrical magnetic transient model of the UHVDC project
the research is mainly focused on protection cooperation
the DC power control mode
voltage dependent current limiting (VDCL) characteristics and protection trip methodology with an obvious impact on converter station overvoltage. In the end
the influence of pole control and protection characteristics on high voltage direct current (HVDC) overvoltage is summed up and suggestions are made for addressing problems encountered in the ±1 100 kV UHVDC project. This work is supported by State Grid Corporation of China
