A powerful technical platform is provided with artificial intelligence technology for the study on fault tolerance of the wide-area backup protection system. With artificial intelligence technology， a wide-area backup protection algorithm based on information fusion with adjacent substation is proposed for application of backup protection system to the centralized substation. Wide-area backup protection system collects various main protection information and back-up protection information from the local substation and adjacent substations， and a fusion strategy is adopted for acquired information. The adaptive function of genetic algorithm（GA） is formed. The absent or error information of local substation can be correct with the optimal search of GA. Simulation test on IEEE 5-generator， 14-bus system shows that the method is simple， effective and with high reliability.
