There are some problems in design and implementation of line protection schemes under open-pole operations listed in the paper. Schemes that employ zero or negative sequence relays should be blocked or modified. Power system swings can happen during the open-pole period. At this time， the operating characteristics of distance elements and directional elements may deteriorate. Some concrete measures used to solve the mal-operation are deeply discussed in this paper.
