With the increased level of intelligence and upgraded automation of operational management and maintenance, IP addresses will be available in smart grid devices. IPv6 is the next-generation Internet network layer protocol. For the transition of smart grid to IPv6, the first problem confronted is to study the allocation of IPv6 address resources. The IPv6 address resources coping strategy and applications suggestions are put forward by drawing on the lessons of addresses in our predicament of the IPv4 age, comparing the IPv6 address with IPv4 address and analyzing IPv6 address demand of the smart grid, developing the mathematical model for IPv6 address forecast. In order to improve the performance of the power system information and communication network and facilitate reduction of the size of routing tables at all levels, it is recommended that the mechanism of application management of unified planning, unified application, and unified management be adopted for the next generation electric power IPv6 address resources to rapidly and sufficiently obtain the IPv6 addresses needed by the national smart grid development by application. Rational application for and retaining of IPv6 addresses makes it possible to minimize IPv6 address fragmentation and improve the efficiency of information and communication networks, thus enhancing the quality of the smart grid.
