A new directional element based on the fault component positive sequence reactance（FCPSR） is presented. When forward fault occurs， FCPSR is equal to the system reactance at the back side， and its sign is negative， also less than the line positive sequence reactance. And when reverse fault occurs， FCPSR is equal to the sum of the line reactance and positive sequence reactance of the system at the remote side， it is larger than the line reactance. The fault direction thus can be distinguished with such feature. The direction element based on FCPSR has high sensitivity and not needs to be set voltage threshold， even when the fault component positive sequence voltage is very low or close to zero. The direction element can work well.
