In a pilot project of substation automation system（SAS） based on the IEC 61850 standard， the design idea of the network communication black box is presented and discussed in detail. The black box can realize the recollection of the whole process of the network communication fault in the SAS and provide a visualization tool for the operation and maintenance personnel to help accurately find the causes of the network communication fault.
