Variability in power output is a characteristic of wind energy, which results in an adverse impact on the power system. In order to reduce the wind power impact on the power quality, this paper proposes an independent power control strategy based on superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES) to smooth short-term fluctuations in wind farm outputs. Fluctuations in the active and reactive power of a wind farm are compensated with four-quadrant power operation of SMES. The system voltage fluctuations are also damped by this way. The energy storage is optimized by properly designing the bandwidth of SMES power regulator. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the control strategy of SMES.
