A new approach to single phase to ground fault section location based on transient signals in a non-solidly earthed network is presented. In this approach the transient reactive power direction is calculated using the transient fault signals in the selected frequency band(SFB). According to the difference of transient reactive power direction, the fault section location is realized. In some situations, it is very difficult to acquire fault signals in the overhead network, so a new method using electromagnetic induction to acquire transient fault signals is presented. The transient fault voltage is obtained by measuring the vertical component of the electric field under the overhead lines and the fault current is obtained by measuring the horizontal component of magnetic field. The method of calculating the location of the optimum point to measure electromagnetic induction is explained and an example is given to show the feasibility of the approach. Finally, some key problems that need to be solved are described.
