Reactive power management is an important part of the design of HVDC projects. Whether the switching sequence of reactive power equipments is correct or not directly determines the stable operation of HVDC transmission systems. This paper describes the switching principle of reactive power equipments and the factors taken into consideration, including operation modes, restrictive conditions, and the primary data which need to be provided. The calculation method for reactive power management is presented and the detailed computation flow is established. Finally, a real project example of reactive power management for HVDC transmission is given, and the results show the validity of the computation flow.
