This paper analyzes possible surges in the single ended voltage traveling wave. Conclusion has been made that the approach without considering bus distributed capacitance can’t accomplish the identification of the second reverse traveling wave accurately. That is, the promulgation characteristics of traveling wave at the shunt capacitor are deduced. Furthermore it is found that the initialized reflection coefficient of voltage traveling wave is always negative. With this conclusion, a new approach is proposed to identify the second reverse traveling wave. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the method proposed is of great reliability and applicability.
