Owing to the complexity of the distribution network
the accuracy of its fault location is not high. All on-line distance measurement and fault location methods become useless during a power line outage. The off-line fault location technology is also not widely used for the realization difficulty of the off-line fault location signal generator. This paper analyzes the vol-tampere characteristics of arc grounding fault
and then proposes a design scheme for two parallel signal generators working in rotation. In the scheme
the smaller generator provides high voltage but less current to re-breakdown the fault point. After breakdown
the other one provides high current but less voltage to keep the fault current stable. An optimization design method of minimizing the power capacity of the two fault location signal generators is proposed. The total power capacity of the optimized dual generator is less than one-tenth of the single generator's. The feasibility of the design scheme is verified by theoretical analysis and experimental results. This work is supported by China Southern Power Grid Co. Ltd. (No. K-GX2014-047).
