In order to realize the fault ride-through(FRT)operation of wind farms integrated to the grid through the voltage source converter based high voltage direct current(VSC-HVDC)transmission system,a mathematical model of the doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG)based wind farm integrated to the grid through VSC-HVDC transmission system is developed with a DFIG-based wind farm as an example, and the characteristics of system disconnection under grid faults are analyzed. Then a fault override control block based on the power variation characteristics of voltage source converter on the wind farm side under a fault is designed for the wind farm to rapidly shed the load of the wind farm, while stabilizing the DC bus voltage. For the voltage source converter on the grid side, fault override control blocks are separately designed for the outside-loop DC voltage control and the inner-loop current control to increase the reactive power supply and alleviate the inrush current during the fault period, respectively. With the cooperation of these fault over-ride control strategies, the FRT capability for the wind farm integrated to the grid through VSC-HVDC transmission system can be effectively realized. Finally, simulations for a wind farm using the proposed FRT control strategy under different grid voltage sags and unbalanced faults are carried out on the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The simulation results and comparison analysis show that the proposed control strategy is correct and valid.
