In view of the long-distance transmission of large-scale wind power as well as large regional power grid interconnection issues facing low-frequency oscillations
a wide-area damping controller design method applicable to wind farm grid-connection is presented. The proposed method divides the average wind speed of wind farms into several control areas. Then identification and damping control for every control area are conducted to solve the problem of controller failures caused by the uncertainty of the wind farm output. The improved auto regressive moving average (ARMA) method and the free weighting matrix method are proposed to achieve system identification and controller design. The simulation of EPRI-8-machine 36-bus test system with wind farms shows that the proposed identification method has overcome the problem of the traditional ARMA method’s low identification accuracy. The delay margin allowed by the proposed controller design method is better than the traditional linear matrix inequality (LMI) method. The proposed gain scheduling control method is capable of meeting the actual situation of wind farm output changes.
