With distributed generations(DGs) interconnected to power grid, the fundamental functions of traditional protection devices such as: protective scope, selectivity, sensitivity and reliability are seriously affected or even complete invalid. Furthermore, the operating characteristic of DGs has randomness and can be easily affected by natural conditions, such as light intensity, temperature, wind speed and other uncontrollable factors so that results in difficulty to forecast fault current of distribution network. Consequently, according to this problem, a suitable protection scheme for distribution network with multi-DG is proposed. It is based on the distribution network structure and the fault current distribution characters of every power source and specially takes into account the operation characteristics of DG. Finally, feasibility and effect of the scheme is verified by an example of distribution network with total DG capacity 1.6 MW in some area of city Jinan.
