An adaptive importance sampling method is applied to reliability evaluation of the bulk power system. The initial settings of the sampling density functions are proposed to enhance the adaptability of the proposed technique in power systems with components of small failure probabilities. The IEEE-RTS system and the modified system are used to verify the proposed method. Numerical results show that the present method can appreciably improve the computing efficiency in the reliability evaluation of the composite power system, especially systems of low failure probability components.
