Fixed-pitch wind turbines, whose blades are connected to the hub directly, feature simple structure, extremely high reliability and so on. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for the offshore wind farms where high reliability is priority. In this paper, the fixed-pitch wind turbine is discussed, and active stall control with limited speed is employed to limit the aerodynamic power at high wind speed conditions. The relationship between the cut-out wind speed and annual energy yield is analyzed, and the results show that the annual energy yield may reduce with the increase of cut-out wind speed. Aimed to optimize the active stall control, the aerodynamic characteristic of the wind turbine is discussed and some design requirements of fixed-pitch wind turbine are discussed. It provides certain guidelines in designing and developing fixed-pitch wind power generation system. Finally, a simulation model of 1.5 MW fixed-pitch direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator is developed with MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results verify the feasibility of the active stall control of fixed-pitch wind turbines.
