The value setting of the traditional current protection has become very difficult for the distribution system with distributed generators(DGs) owing to the randomness of the DG output power, especially the inverter interfaced DG(IIDG). Based on a fault characteristic analysis of the distribution system with IIDG and the traditional adaptive current instantaneous trip protection scheme, the adaptive current instantaneous trip protection scheme for the distribution system with IIDG is studied to solve this problem. The results show that the value of the relay whose dorsal side is connected to IIDG can still be set according to the form of the traditional scheme, with some parameters defined anew. This scheme can still automatically calculate the settings according to the current operation mode and the output power of IIDG with no need for communication. Compared with the traditional current instantaneous trip protection scheme, the protection performance is greatly improved. Simulation results on a 10 kV distribution system have verified the validity of the scheme proposed.
