On the basis of a description of the common functional composition of the protection setting calculation software， the universality of the software is discussed in detail from the viewpoint of power system operating conditions combination， step relay coordination， protective device setting calculation and relay setting listing. It is pointed out that the combination of the optional principle and the user-defined relay setting calculation principle is a good way to solve the universality problem. Besides， an integral solution based on VBScript and Excel technology for the universal protection setting calculation software is proposed. The software developed based on the proposed scheme can greatly reduce the maintenance workload and is capable of good universality and expandability. It is being successfully applied in the relay protection departments of many power companies.
