Since redundant communication is not particularized in IEC 61850, several solutions have recently been proposed. The ideal scheme for IEC 61850 is to realize redundant communication below the addressing level provided for logical access point, i.e. IED using a single IP address. However, the current“single IP address” schemes, such as adding specific SCSM parameters to the stack mapping, or the redundant ring scheme based on Ethernet switches, all have the interoperability problem. A novel scheme, the dual subnet in duplicated star topology, is proposed in this paper. Although the interoperability is not fully resolved, this scheme is more reliable. It is compatible with the dual communication structure for protecting the relevant functions, and the IEC 60870-5-104 redundant communication architecture. It is proposed that the future edition of IEC 61850 standardize the redundancy communications between IEDs, with this scheme as the standard for guaranteeing the interoperability.
