The basic components and the experiment of the first conduction-cooled high Tcsuperconducting magnetic energy storage(35 kJ/7 kW) in China is described. The SMES system is composed of superconducting magnet, cooling system, power conditioning system and monitored control system. The following conclusions can be achieved through the system experiment: the temperature of superconducting magnet could reach under 20 K; the critical current of superconducting magnet is 150 A, the maximum energy storage is 84 kJ, and the maximum central magnetic field is 4.5 T; monitored control system and power conditioning system can respond very rapidly to exchange active and reactive power independently in four quadrants with ac power system. In the dynamic simulated experiment of power system, the SMES can effectively damp the power oscillation due to the fault of line to ground at the generator terminal.
